Abstract. Inrespective of cropping system (CKP or O-WR open without the recirculation of nutrient solution), the accumulation of sulphates took place, although more sulphates accumulated in the O-WR. It may explain the differences between systems in the yield of tomatoes. The plants grown on the solution with the highest concentration of sulphates contained least Ca and P. There was no effect of sulphates on the nutritive value of fruits.

Summary
Tomato plants cv. ‘Cunero’ were grown on coconut-fiber in two different systems: NFT (3 tubes) or open, without the recirculation of nutrient solution (O-WR, 2 tubes). At the beginning of experiment the nutrient solutions contained different sulphate levels: I – 200, II – 400 and III – 600 mg SO4-2 dm-3 in the NFT and I – 200 and II – 600 mg SO4-2 dm-3 in the O-WR system. The accumulation of sulphates in the root environment was observed in both systems, however, higher levels of accumulated sulphates were shown in the O-WR system. The accumulation of sulphates affected tomato yield only in the O-WR system. Elevated sulphate levels could influence the nutritional status of plants, mainly macro nutrient contents, as well as dry matter and sugar content in tomato fruits grown in the O-WR.
